Mastodon drops the record: Marrow Deep is a gut punch and a gauntlet

Grief made a record. Play it loud.

Mastodon put out Marrow Deep on August 28 and I have not been able to put it down since. Album nine, first one on Loma Vista, and the first one they made without Brent Hinds after he left the band and then died. That is a hell of a hole to write around. They did not paper over it and they did not turn the record into a shrine either. Nick Johnston is on lead guitar and the man does not flinch. Joao Nogueira is a full member now, and those keys give this thing air that Mastodon records have never had. Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou produced. Rolling Stone, Revolver, Consequence, Wall of Sound, everybody came back with the same read: this is a new chapter and it is heavy as hell. Grief made a record. Go play it loud. Flowers for the grind.

Bad Wolves loses a guitarist: AJ Rebollo walks over a Dolly Parton cash grab

AJ Rebollo quit Bad Wolves on August 29 and said the quiet part out loud. Better Noise Music is pushing the band's cover of Jolene out on August 31, days after Dolly Parton died, and the band did not want it out. Rebollo says he can no longer in good faith co-sign the decisions being made FOR this band by the label. Labels will squeeze a corpse for streams and then call it a tribute. Respect to the guy for eating the loss instead of the check. Flowers for the grind.

La Esfinge books the big room: Cristian Castro's metal band takes the Palacio

Cristian Castro's metal outfit La Esfinge finally locked real dates. December 4 and 5 at the Palacio de los Deportes, then Monterrey and Guadalajara, behind the new record La Serpiente Emplumada. Single Mensajero lands September 17. Laugh all you want. That is a big room. Flowers for the grind.
