Weekly Trends: Anthrax Break a Ten Year Silence, Ill Niño Run the Debut Back in CDMX, Louder Than Life Opens the Gates
Big week. A Big Four band finally broke a decade of silence, a nu metal record that put congas in the pit turned 25 in Mexico City, and the biggest rock festival in the country threw its doors open in Kentucky.
Anthrax drop the record: Cursum Perficio lands after ten years and it is not a goodbye
Ten years. Ten fucking years since For All Kings, and Anthrax finally put it out today. Cursum Perficio, eleven tracks, cut at Dave Grohl's Studio 606 with Jay Ruston on the boards. Scott Ian, Charlie Benante, Frank Bello, Jonathan Donais and Joey Belladonna still sound like a band, not five guys mailing in parts from five zip codes. Now about that title. Cursum Perficio is Latin for "my journey is complete," and Benante says Marilyn Monroe had it on a plaque in her house. Every corner of the internet read that as a Big Four band writing its own obituary. The band says no. Not the end. Good. Ten years is a long time to sit on a record, and the reviews landing this week call it their strongest late period work. That is a hell of a thing to say about a band forty-five years deep. Flowers for the grind.
Ill Niño run the debut back: two nights in Mexico City for 25 years of Revolution Revolución
Ill Niño took Mexico City for two straight nights, September 16 and 17 at the Fuck Off Room, playing Revolution Revolución almost front to back for its 25th birthday. "If You Still Hate Me," "Unreal," "Liar," "Rumba," "Loco," all of it, closing on the title track. That record put congas and Spanish vocals inside American nu metal in 2001 when nobody was asking for it. They also dropped a new one live, "Born to Suffer," and it is meaner than anything on the debut. Twenty-five years in and still swinging.
Louder Than Life opens the gates: Pantera's only US show of the year and Megadeth's long goodbye
Louder Than Life kicked off Thursday in Louisville, four days and close to 200 bands at the Kentucky Expo Center. Pantera plays its only US date of the year on the Thursday bill with Iron Maiden, and Megadeth rolls through as part of the farewell. Get your earplugs.
Semana pesada.
Traigan tapones.
